Tooth Extractions

Preserve Your Natural Teeth

We Make It Easy

While our aim is always to preserve your natural teeth, there are occasions due to crowding, decay, or injury when removal is the best option. Even though it may sound daunting, most extractions are straightforward routine procedures. Our dentist uses a gentle, conservative approach to make sure you heal comfortably and quickly.

Leaving a failing tooth in place can lead to pain, infection, and further complications. Having it removed safely today can prevent headaches and keep your smile healthy for the future.

Determining Your Extraction Needs

First, we’ll take x-rays to see exactly how the tooth sits in your jaw. For either type of extraction, we numb the area with local anesthesia and can offer sedation if you’re anxious (you’ll need a ride home if you choose sedation).

A simple extraction is used when the entire tooth is visible. The dentist gently widens the socket with an elevator tool, then eases the tooth out with forceps. You may feel pressure, but no pain. Afterward, we clean the socket and place gauze to help a blood clot form.

When a tooth is broken off below the gumline or impacted, a surgical extraction is needed. The doctor makes a small incision, lifts a flap of gum tissue, and may remove a bit of bone to free the tooth. Afterward, the site is cleaned, sutured, and you may receive a short course of pain medication.

Aftercare is crucial. Keep the clot in place by avoiding smoking, straws, spitting or heavy rinsing for three days. If the clot is lost, you could develop a dry socket—call us immediately if you experience severe pain. Most healing happens within two weeks, and we can discuss tooth replacement options like a bridge or implant whenever you’re ready.
