There are three main types of mouthguards, and knowing the difference can help you choose the right protection for your smile.
Ready-Made Mouthguards
These are one-size-fits-most guards you can grab off the shelf at most pharmacies. They’re inexpensive and easy to find, but they don’t offer much in terms of comfort or fit. Because they aren’t molded to your teeth, they can feel bulky and may not stay in place during play.
Boil and Bite Mouthguards
Also sold over the counter, these guards are made from a soft plastic that becomes pliable when heated. You boil them briefly, then bite down to create a more personalized fit. They’re a step up from ready-made guards in terms of comfort, but they still don’t match the durability or fit of a professionally made one. They’re also more prone to wear and tear, especially if the wearer tends to chew on them.
