Sports Mouthguards Dentistry

Sports mouthguards — or sportsguards — are a must for anyone playing a sport where the risk of falls, collisions, or contact is even remotely possible. Every year, countless dental injuries happen during athletics, many of which could have been prevented with a simple mouthguard.

We design custom-fit sportsguards to offer superior protection, comfort, and breathability.

Unlike over-the-counter versions, our guards are molded to your teeth for a snug, secure fit that won’t interfere with talking or breathing. They’re ideal for athletes of all ages — whether you’re on a competitive team or just staying active for fun.

Mouthguards aren’t just for football or hockey. We recommend them for soccer, basketball, volleyball, mountain biking, gymnastics, rollerblading, and even skateboarding. If your sport involves speed, contact, or the chance of a hard fall, protect your smile before you play.

Types of Sports Mouthguards

There are three main types of mouthguards, and knowing the difference can help you choose the right protection for your smile.

Ready-Made Mouthguards
These are one-size-fits-most guards you can grab off the shelf at most pharmacies. They’re inexpensive and easy to find, but they don’t offer much in terms of comfort or fit. Because they aren’t molded to your teeth, they can feel bulky and may not stay in place during play.

Boil and Bite Mouthguards
Also sold over the counter, these guards are made from a soft plastic that becomes pliable when heated. You boil them briefly, then bite down to create a more personalized fit. They’re a step up from ready-made guards in terms of comfort, but they still don’t match the durability or fit of a professionally made one. They’re also more prone to wear and tear, especially if the wearer tends to chew on them.

Custom Mouthguards
Custom guards are designed by a dentist using a precise mold of your teeth. They are made from high-quality materials that are built to last, and they provide the most comfortable and secure fit. Because they fit so well, athletes are more likely to wear them consistently — and that’s what makes them the best choice for both safety and performance.

If you or your child is active in sports, we recommend investing in a custom mouthguard. It’s a small price to pay to avoid major dental injuries down the line.
