Scaling & Root Planing

A Deep Cleaning That Treats Gum Disease

Remove Plaque & Tartar

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that treats gum disease by removing plaque and tartar from both the tooth surfaces and the roots beneath your gums. Using specialized hand or electronic tools, we clear out the bacteria-filled buildup that creates pockets and causes inflammation.

While it doesn’t cure gum disease, it can halt or slow its progression, reduce bleeding and swelling, and often prevent the need for future surgeries. For many patients, this treatment becomes part of their regular dental care alongside cleanings and exams to keep gums healthy.

Procedure Overview

A Scaler Or Curette?

Scaling and root planing uses two main tools. A scaler or curette, which resembles a metal stick with a curved tip, is used to scrape away plaque and tartar from your teeth below the gum line. An ultrasonic instrument may also be used, with a vibrating tip that breaks up buildup and a gentle water spray that rinses it away and keeps the area cool.

Once the hard deposits are removed, the roots of your teeth are smoothed to help gums reattach and to make it harder for bacteria to collect. A topical disinfectant or antibiotic may be applied afterward to reduce the chance of infection returning.

We numb only the area being treated, usually one or two sections of your mouth per visit, so you remain comfortable and can still eat and drink normally once the anesthesia wears off.
